Love, Juliebug: The Root of All Evil

The Root of All Evil

I've often heard people quote a verse from the Bible, "Money is the root of all evil". This is not actually how the verse was written. It is "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." It is not the money but our love of it that leads us astray. In other words...

I love the Message version of the Bible sometimes. It really brings out a response in me. So, I've heard this verse many times. Chasing after money will lead you nowhere of value. And, you'd think in all those times that I would have understood something.

Chasing after money is not something that is solely for the rich.

I don't know why it didn't dawn on me that us normal, broke people (Is that normal?) could be guilty of chasing after money. But, when it is worded as the graphic above shows "Lust for money". I am guilty of this. Guilty as charged. I lust for more things but even more than that I lust for the comfort & peace of mind that money provides. But, it doesn't really give you peace when you have money. In fact, you sometimes have worse issues because of it.
“Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being."
Matthew 6:19-21 (MSG)

Worry about your treasures being stolen. Always wanting more. And, the less obvious, when you are "set" financially, your faith doesn't always lie with God. That's right. I get cocky when things are comfortable. I think, life's not too bad. I can do this on my own. Am I turning to God to provide for me? Is He showing me everyday miracles in how He cares for me? Is there even room for a miracle? I don't think so. That's why I don't believe in the health & wealth, happiness all the time version of Christianity.
“You can’t worship two gods at once. Loving one god, you’ll end up hating the other. Adoration of one feeds contempt for the other. You can’t worship God and Money both." Matthew 6:24
Ouch. That hurts to really think about. I don't want to have contempt for God. That begins with me, with my attitude. With my prayers. With what I choose to think about. I don't want to worship Money. And, if that's true, then I need to take it off the throne and let God take His rightful place in my life.
